Alberta’s area codes explained
Alberta is served by two original codes, 403 in the south and 780 in the north, with the dividing line running roughly north of Red Deer. The newer codes 587, 825 and 368 are overlays on the entire province, so a number with any of them could belong to Calgary, Edmonton or a small town.
Ten-digit dialling
Since the entire province uses overlays, Albertans dial ten digits for every call. Forms and databases should therefore store the area code with every number, and should not assume it can be omitted for local numbers.
Using Alberta numbers in testing
Use the generator above to produce numbers with 403 or 780 when you want a city-specific example, or choose any Alberta code for variety. The default test mode uses the fictional 555-0100 to 555-0199 range, so the numbers are safe in demos, tutorials and shared test databases.
