Quebec’s four regional groups

Quebec’s area codes follow its geography. 514 and 438 cover the island of Montreal; 450 and 579 cover the suburbs around it; 418 and 581 cover Quebec City and the eastern part of the province; and 819 and 873 cover the west and centre, including Gatineau and Sherbrooke. The overlays 367 and 468 were added later to relieve the older codes.

Writing Quebec phone numbers

The format is the same as elsewhere in North America, but many Quebec websites and French-language documents use a hyphen or space layout such as 514 555-0123 or 514-555-0123. Systems that serve Quebec should accept all of these and store the number in E.164 form, for example +15145550123.

If your application is bilingual, test it with numbers formatted in both common styles and with the French labels “téléphone” and “cellulaire” beside the field.

Using Quebec numbers in test data

The generator above lets you choose a specific Quebec code or any of them. Test mode uses the reserved 555-0100 to 555-0199 range, which cannot be assigned to a real subscriber. Use that mode for documentation, demos and shared databases.
