Ontario area codes at a glance
Ontario is Canada’s most populous province and has more area codes than any other. That is why a generic “Canadian number” is often not enough for testing: a form for a Toronto business may need a 416, 647 or 437 number, while a Windsor customer record would normally show 519, 226 or 548.
Ontario’s codes fall into six geographic groups, shown in the table above. Within each group the older code was joined by one or more overlay codes, so two neighbours on the same street can have different area codes.
Why Ontario needs so many codes
Growth in the Greater Toronto Area used up numbers in each code in turn. Toronto’s 416 was split in the 1990s, with the suburbs moving to 905. In 2001 overlays (647 in Toronto, 289 around 905) were added, and 437 and 365 followed in 2013. Overlays mean everyone keeps their number, but local calls require dialling all ten digits.
The same pattern repeated in southwestern Ontario (519, then 226, then 548) and in the east (613, then 343).
Using these numbers in testing
Choose an area code from the generator above and set the format your application expects. For example, a CRM import test might need +14165550123, while a UI mockup might look better with (416) 555-0123. If your form should accept only Ontario numbers, test it with codes from each group in the table, not only 416.
By default the generator produces numbers in the reserved fictional range, 555-0100 to 555-0199, so they cannot reach a real person. Turn that option off only if you need realistic-looking digits, and never call or text the results.
Frequently asked questions
What area codes does Ontario use?
Ontario uses 416, 647 and 437 (Toronto); 905, 289 and 365 (the Greater Toronto Area outside Toronto); 613 and 343 (Ottawa and eastern Ontario); 519, 226 and 548 (southwestern Ontario); 705, 249 and 683 (central and northern Ontario); and 807 (northwestern Ontario).
Do I need to dial the area code for local calls in Ontario?
Yes. Most of Ontario uses overlay area codes, so ten-digit dialling is required even for local calls.
Can I generate a number for a specific Ontario city?
Pick the area code that serves the city, for example 416 for Toronto, 613 for Ottawa or 519 for London, and generate numbers with that code. Our Toronto page is preset to the Toronto codes.
Are these Ontario numbers real?
In the default test mode, no. They use the 555-0100 to 555-0199 range reserved for fictional use. In realistic mode the digits are random and could match a real line, so they must never be called or texted.
